Dickcissel at Pelee

(Note: this was posted for Wed May 11th, 2011. The labels somehow became corrupted, so a recent fix reposted this as a new posting... I've corrected the date back to the 11th of May)

I've made an effort to go to Pelee at least weekly from late April to late May, and during peak season, I even plan on stopping in mid-week. I went to Pelee for about 2.5 hours tonight and spent most of the time on the west-side paths. This was suggested by the daily Pelee birding report due to the strong East winds.

The highlight of todays trip was stopping off at Pelee Wings and seeing Dickcissel (lifer #240) hop around on the grass below the feeders. Along with Dickcissel, Baltimore Orioles were taking advantage of the sugar-water feeders and a Red headed Woodpecker was eating from the feeder as well. Incredible!
At the park, I saw very few warblers today. I saw many sparrows and orioles though.

Even though I saw few Warblers today, I did see some great birds. Some (from memory) include:
Lincoln's Sparrow (on 3 seperate occasions)
White Crowned Sparrow
Orchard Oriole (many)
Baltimore Oriole (many)
Red Headed Woodpecker
Winter Wren
House Wren
Common Yellowthroat
Northern Waterthrush
Ruby Crowned Kinglet
Ruby throated Humingbird
Rose breasted Grosbeak
Veery
Yellow Warbler (many)
Nashville Warbler (many)
Ovenbird

I also made an honest attempt to see the Pacific Loon that has been around Pelee, but can't say I could see it. Where are all the warblers??? I've been hard-pressed to find a black throated green this season!

Good Birding!

  1. Thank you for posting your sightings! Your photographs are awesome. We also have committed to going every weekend, plus today I took a day off to go and stay all day. We also tried but did not see the Pacific Loon. We did have a few warblers, though...Redstart, Black-throated Green, Orange-crowned, Golden-winged, Magnolia, N. Waterthrush. There were lots of Pipits at Hillman Marsh, among other things.

  2. BTGR warblers may have pushed through already, Dwayne-- I see a handful inland daily now. :P

I'm planning a Pelee or Rondeau trip myself in a week or so... maybe I'll see you.

  3. How obliging of the dickcissel (and the others) to pose right out in the open for you!

  4. I'm having great luck planting myself along the driveway to the Northwest Beach parking lot. It's been very birdy for me. A black-throated green presented itself right in the cedar at the bottom of the driveway and the parking lot yesterday. You mean you missed it??? lol
Also, on the 10th, I parked down at the Black Willow parking lot, got out of the van and a Prairie warbler landed in the tree in front of me! No one believed me of course because I'm a novice but I for damn sure counted it! lol
I've seen 29 species of warblers so far which is ok but I've missed some that others seem to spot without a problem. Today, a new friend, Ian, had a Kirtland land right in front of him on the beach while he was looking for the Le Conte's sparrow for crying out loud.
I am always just arriving as one's left or just leaving when one's arrived. I'm not meant to see that bird! :(
Tonight as I was walking I found a dead Warbling Vireo on the side of the road. That was a life bird for me and now the second dead life bird I've found. I hope that's not bad luck or something! lol

Happy Birding, Dwayne! I hope you find a Black-throated Green!
